Boarbank Hall

Grange Over Sands, Cumbria

England

Boarbank Hall is a special place of peace and hospitality.
Our Community of Augustinian Sisters warmly welcome all our guests to share our home.

The Community and Places for Prayer

Boarbank is the home of a Community of Catholic Christian Sisters, Augustinians of the Mercy of Jesus.
Our special charism is hospitality.  We live this out especially by welcoming visitors to our Guest House and our Nursing Home. We sing together daily Morning, Evening and Night Prayer, and warmly welcome guests to join us. There is a daily Mass, open to all. We have a large chapel and an oratory, and our gardens include plenty of quiet spots for prayer and reflection. These are all available at any time.

The Guest House and Gardens

The Guest House has Georgian and Edwardian features and several day rooms available for guests to enjoy, including a Drawing Room, Parlour and TV Lounge. We have a small library, table tennis table, DVD player and two pianos. Our gardens include flowerbeds, woodland, a Grotto for prayer, a vegetable garden and orchard.

Prices include three cooked meals a day, of old-fashioned home cooking, with set menus produced by our professional staff. Some of the produce comes from our own garden. Morning coffee and afternoon tea include home-baked biscuits and cakes. Packed lunches are also available. We have a lot of experience in catering for people with special diets, including gluten intolerance. From Christmas until the springtime there is a welcoming log fire in the Hall.

We offer en-suite shower rooms with toilet, and rooms with a sink and shared bathrooms. All bedrooms have TV and facilities for making hot drinks. Hair dryers can be borrowed. Wifi is available throughout the Guest House. We usually have French, Hungarian, Polish and Italian speakers available if you need linguistic help. There is ample free on-site parking in the grounds of Boarbank Hall.

We are sorry that we cannot accept pets.

Groups and Activities

We run an annual programme of residential retreats on themes including the Bible, healthcare, faith; the arts and birdwatching; prayer (for more see http://www.boarbankhall.org.uk/index.php/whats-on).
We also welcome bookings from any other groups, for example from parishes, schools charities or student chaplaincies. We are happy to work with any group who would like help in arranging a programme or speakers.

We can usually negotiate a reduced price for groups where this is needed.

Places to See and Things to Do

We are surrounded by the most beautiful countryside set between the Lake District fells and Morecambe Bay.
Allithwaite is a quiet village that is near Cartmel with its famous Priory, racecourse and reputation for fine foods, and Grange over Sands with its beautiful prom. Grange is a popular stop for cyclists on the local way-marked cycle routes.

Interesting places to visit nearby include Holker Hall and Sizergh Castle, both with lovely gardens.
Lake Windermere is about 20 minutes’ drive away. The Cartmel Peninsular and Lake District are great places for accessing outdoor activities like walking, birdwatching, watersports and even skydiving!

There are local buses and train stations reachable by keen walkers, but for others a car is advised, unless you simply want to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Boarbank and its immediate environs.
